There are few things in life better than a perfect cookie. That soft, yet firm bite filled with sugar, chocolate or cream is the perfect ending to a rough day of working hard, doing homework and applying for scholarships. Let’s face it, not every homemade cookie is created equally, and, no matter how hard we try, we don’t always get the perfect result.

Here are three tips that are guaranteed to make your cookies come out better.

1. Don’t Over Mix

Over mixing cookie dough can have drastic effects on the finished product. Too little or too much mixing can lead to flat cookies or cookies that have too much of a cake-like consistency. The secret, unless the recipe tells you otherwise, is to just mix your ingredients enough that they are all incorporated. Once everything has formed a dough, turn the mixer off.

2. Perfect Baking Time

You’ll know your cookies are done when they are just barely golden brown. When you check them, if they don’t look damp, it’s time to take them out. One little-known trick is to let your cookies finish baking on the cookie sheets after you pull them out of the oven. Once they hit that mark where they look dry, just take the cookies out of the stove and let them stand until they are finished cooking.

3. Follow the Directions

Sometimes, people have a tendency to just mix all the ingredients in a cookie recipe at once. Big mistake. Certain ingredients need to be mixed together so the cookies will have the right consistency, and bake well. Read the directions carefully and if the recipe tells you to mix all the dry ingredients first, trust what it tells you and do it.

Baking cookies is one of the easiest ways to stock up on homemade treats. With these tricks, every batch will come out just right!
